Oh. my. goodness. That example was totally us! We rented for 10 years. Saved cash like crazy people. Bought our very first home with cash. Floor to ceiling remodeled the entire thing (with cash). Then one of Mr. Mt’s coworkers was sitting in our living room and said, “Oh, this is cozy for a starter home.”

With out missing a beat he replied, “We actually really like our home. We might live here forever.” (drop mic, walk off stage)

What the hell. (But you are right, if you don’t laugh at all the crazy crap, you’ll just cry!) I felt like saying, “If you bought your first house with cash, live debt free, and are 3 years out from being FI, please tell me more about how we should upgrade out of our “cozy” “starter home”. If not, we’re good. Thanks anyways!” I’ll take your backhanded compliment and raise you some sarcasm lady! But alas, unlike her I am not overtly rude. =)

DAYYYYMN! That reply was savage!!! (“We actually really like our home. We might live here forever.”)

I wonder how she felt about what she said and the reply Mr. Mt handed back to her.

Honestly I don’t think people mean it as an insult, but when you think about it for a minute it really is a horrible mentality to have.

Wow, again, I’m super impressed that you guys stuck to your guns and actually replied like that. I’m kinda speechless. Y’all are my new heroes.

Boy, if you don’t stick to your guns, the world is relentlessly trying to pull you back to average. Being insecure in frugal choices ( or any unconventional choice) is doomed to failure. Some day I will write a post about all the crazy things people have said to us. =) Better yet, road trip to Montana and we will laugh about it over beers.
